How important is sport and free time in Germany?
I’m doing this as one of my topics for my AS Level oral exam. Can anyone help with facts figures, websites, passages or sentences?
Thanks for answers, great help, but pls to everyone else, keep the answers coming! xx
Free time and sport are important in Germany, the German Fussball league draw allot of supporters and the European and world cups will bring Germany to a halt when Germany plays. Last year during the world cup when Germany played the city was almost a ghost town, everyone was where a TV was and you could here the game because everyone was watching the same. It was incredible to walk down the street and keep up with the game because you heard it from every house you passed.
Germans love there free time. Popular thing to do is take walks visit the outdoor cafes, beer gartens, lakes, mountains and rivers. Popular sports are Football (Soccer), basket ball, tennis.

Excerpt: Titisee-Neustadt is a city in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. The town is a spa known for its Kneipp hydrotherapeutic and curative methods. Furthermore, it is a winter sport centre. Titisee (north shore)The community of Titisee lies on the north shore of Titisee, a lake in the eastern Feldberg in the Black Forest, which ranges from 780 to 1 192 m above sea level. The community of Neustadt is found 5 km to the east. The town lies on a small river called the Seebach (Lake Brook) as it comes in from Feldberg-Bärental to feed Titisee, as the Gutach (Good Water) as it flows out of the lake, and east of Neustadt, where it merges with the Haslach to become a whitewater torrent, as the Wutach (Furious Water). After flowing out of the town, it passes through the well known Wutachschlucht (Wutach Gorge), and ends by emptying into the Rhine. Titisee-Neustadt’s highest point is the Hochfirst, a peak overlooking the lake on the municipal boundary with Lenzkirch and marked by the Hochfirst Tower. It is 1 192 m high. Titisee-Neustadt is divided into seven communities which historically have been separate, although they are now amalgamated into one municipality. Neustadt was founded in 1250 by the Princes of Fürstenberg. There followed various name changes: the town was called Nova Civitas in 1275 (which has the same meaning in Latin “New City” as the German name Neustadt), in 1294 Neuwenstadt, in 1335 Neuwen-statt, in 1630 Neostadium and in 1650 New-Statt before it later became Neustadt. From 1669 to 1806 there was a Capuchin monastery in Neustadt. In 1817, a great deal of the town was destroyed in a great fire. In the 18th century, the clockmaking trade developed in the town to become a major part of the… More: |

Excerpt: This article presents an overview of English cricket from 1816 to 1863. For more detailed coverage of the period, see the series of season reviews in Category:English cricket seasons from 1816 to 1863. Although the article mentions some events in other countries, these are connected with the introduction of cricket from England and into those countries. For additional information about the development of the game in the main cricket-playing countries outside England during the period, see: The Napoleonic Wars had deprived cricket of investment and manpower, particularly after 1810 as the conflict in the Peninsular War reached its height and the invasion of France followed. A recovery began in 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo, and a more widespread return to normality can be observed from 1816, although it was not until 1825 that inter-county matches were resurrected when Kent played Sussex. By 1816, the present Lord’s Cricket Ground had become the sport’s major venue and was the home of the premier club, MCC. MCC, since it was founded in 1787, had gradually increased its influence and its control, especially in its role as the guardian of the Laws of Cricket. During the 19th century, it made efforts to suppress the gambling that had underwritten and sometimes blighted cricket in the past. But MCC was by no means in total control of events. It was the subject of bitter controversy in the post-war period, largely because of the activities of Lord Frederick Beauclerk, one of the sport’s more dubious personalities who effectively “ran” the MCC Committee for many years. In 1825, the club almost foundered in the face of a dual crisis. First, on the night of Thursday 28 July following a schools match at Lord’s between Harrow and Winchester,… More: |

1860s in Sports: Overview of English Cricket From 1816 to 1863 $14.13 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge.

Excerpt: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland competed as Great Britain at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. It was the second appearance of the European nation, after having participated in the inaugural 1896 Games. In Olympic competition, the nation has always shortened its official name to Great Britain rather than the more common United Kingdom seen elsewhere. Additionally, British athletes were part of three mixed teams to win gold medals. Additionally, British athletes were part of two mixed teams to win silver medals. Additionally, British athletes were part of two mixed teams to win bronze medals. Great Britain took 4 gold medals in athletics, including one as part of a mixed team (with 4 British athletes and one Australian). This put them second on the leaderboard for that sport, behind the dominant United States as the two nations to win multiple gold medals in the sport. The British team won a total of 9 athletics medals including a sweep of the 4000 metre steeplechase event. 9 athletes competed in 10 events. Great Britain was represented by the Devon and Somerset Wanderers in cricket in 1900. The team won the only match, a 2-day 12-man contest, by 158 runs. Great Britain first competed in fencing at the Olympics in the sport’s second appearance. The nation sent one fencer. Upton Park F.C. represented Great Britain in the football competition. The club squad won its only match, against Club Française, 4-0. Great Britain was one of four nations to compete in the first Olympic golf events. The British golfers took the silver and bronze medals in the men’s competition, making Great Britain the only nation other than the United States to win a golfing medal that year. Great Britain’s second Olympic gymnastics appearance was… More: |

1900 Summer Olympics $21.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The 1900 Summer Olympics, today officially known as the Games of the II Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in 1900 in Paris, France. No opening or closing ceremonies were held; competitions began on May 14 and ended on October 28. The Games were held as part of the 1900 World’s Fair. Over a thousand competitors took part in 19 different sports. Women took part in the games for the first time and Charlotte Cooper became the first female Olympic champion. The decision to hold competitions on a Sunday brought protests from many American athletes, who travelled as representatives of their colleges and were expected to withdraw rather than compete on their religious day of rest. At the Sorbonne conference of 1895, Baron de Coubertin proposed that the Olympic Games should take place in 1900 in Paris. The delegates to the conference were unwilling to wait six years and lobbied to hold the first games in 1896. A decision was made to hold the first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens and that Paris would host the second celebration. Most of the winners in 1900 did not receive medals, but were given cups or trophies. Professionals competed in fencing and Albert Robert Ayat (France), who won the épée for amateurs and masters, was awarded a prize of 3000 francs. Some unusual events were contested for the only time in the history of the Games including automobile and motorcycle racing, ballooning, cricket, croquet, Basque pelota, 200m swimming obstacle race and underwater swimming. The 1900 Games were held as part of the 1900 Exposition Universelle. The Baron de Coubertin believed that this would help public awareness of the Olympics and submitted elaborate plans to rebuild the ancient site of Olympia, complete with statues,… More: |

Excerpt: The 1906 Intercalated Games (also Athens 1906 Olympic Games ) were an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in Athens , Greece . They were at the time considered to be Olympic Games . While medals were distributed to the participants during these games, the medals are not officially recognized by the IOC . Origin The first Intercalated Games had been scheduled by the IOC in 1901 as part of a new schedule, where every four years, in between the internationally organized games, there would be intermediate games held in Athens. This was apparently a bit of a compromise: After the successful games of Athens 1896 the Greeks suggested they could organize the games every four years. Since they had the accommodations, and had proven to be able to hold well-organized games, they received quite a bit of support. However, Pierre de Coubertin , the founder of the International Olympic Committee opposed this. De Coubertin had intended the first games to be in Paris in 1900. After Paris lost the premiere Olympics, de Coubertin did not want the games to be permanently hosted elsewhere. Thus the second games became the Paris 1900 games. When these games turned out less than perfect and were overshadowed by the Exposition Universelle the IOC supported the Greek idea, by granting them a second series of quadrennial games, in between the first series. All of the games would be International Olympic Games; the difference was just that half of them would follow De Coubertin’s idea of organizing them in different countries to make the Olympic Movement more international, while the other half would follow the Greeks’ idea of a permanent home with the Greek NOC as experienced organizers. This was a departure from the ancient schedule, but it was expected that if the ancient Greeks |

Excerpt: The Volkswagen Type 2 (also officially known as Transporter or informally as Bus) was the second automotive line introduced by German automaker Volkswagen. It was a panel van introduced in 1950, initially based on Volkswagen’s first model, the Type 1, the economy car also known as the “Beetle”. The Type 2 is the forerunner of modern cargo and passenger vans. The Type 2 spawned a number of imitators, both in the United States and Europe, including the Ford Econoline, Dodge A100, and the Corvair 95 Corvan, the last even adopting the Type 2’s rear-engine configuration. As of January 2010, updated versions of this line are produced for international markets, both as a passenger and cargo van, and as a pickup truck. It is also unofficially known as a “microbus”, a “minibus” or “hippie van,” the latter due to its popularity with the 1960s/70s counterculture movement. The idea for the Type 2 is credited to Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon. (It has similarities in conce… More: |

Jack Brabham won the title in a sport still reeling from the tragic loss of several drivers, including reigning champion Mike Hawthorn .Season summary Vanwall ’s withdrawal, believed to have been a result of the high mortality rate of the 1958 season, left Ferrari as the only race-winning team in the Championship. However, the British dominance continued with Cooper ’s revolutionary rear-engined cars. Powered by the compact Coventry-Climax 2.5 litre engine, the Coopers driven by Jack Brabham , Stirling Moss and Bruce McLaren won five races and BRM finally won one in the hands of Jo Bonnier .Aston Martin also appeared with a car which, in the face of Cooper’s rear-engined revolution, was outdated and overweight. The German Grand Prix was held for the second time on the very high speed AVUS circuit, where Ferrari ’s Jean Behra was killed during an unrelated sports car race.Ferrari’s Tony Brooks took the fight to the Coopers and going into the final race he, Moss or Brabham could win the title. Moss retired from the race , the inaugural United States Grand Prix, giving Brabham the lead. Brabham ran out of fuel on |

Excerpt: The 1960 Winter Olympics , officially known as the VIII Olympic Winter Games , were a winter multi-sport event that was held between February 18 and February 28, 1960 in Squaw Valley , California , United States (located near the Lake Tahoe basin). Squaw Valley won the bid in 1955. It was the first Olympic Games in North America in 28 years (after the Lake Placid Winter Olympics in 1932).Host selection Alexander Cushing, the creator of the resort , was initially inspired to submit Squaw Valley when he noticed a newspaper article mentioning Reno, Nevada and Anchorage, Alaska had expressed interest in the Games. Squaw Valley was a town with no mayor, and claimed one ski resort with only one chairlift, two rope tows, and a fifty-room lodge. In fact, Cushing was the only inhabitant and homeowner in the whole area. To this day, many wonder how he convinced the International Olympic Committee to select the little known resort. Nevertheless, the bid captured the imagination of the International Olympic Committee , although IOC head Avery Brundage stated “the USOC obviously has taken leave of their senses.” Cushing campaigned vigorously to win the Games and networked to gain many allies, particularly from South American Olympic Committees, who normally cared little for the Winter Games. Stressing simplicity and “the World’s Games” (as opposed to dominant Europe), the tiny resort beat out previous hosts St. Moritz , Garmisch-Partenkirchen , and favorite Innsbruck, Austria , which would go on to host the 1964 Winter Olympics. The Games were awarded on June 16, 1955, at the 50th IOC Session in Paris , France, to “shock and disbelief” over Innsbruck, and a four and a half year rush to construct roads, hotels, restaurants, and bridges, as well as the ice arena, the speed skating track, |

Excerpt: The AEREON 26 was an experimental aircraft developed to investigate lifting body design with a view to using its shape to create hybrid designs, part airship , part conventional aircraft. It was powered by a piston engine, driving a pusher propeller, and generated lift through the aerodynamics of its lozenge-shaped fuselage. Although results of flight tests conducted in 1971 were promising, funding for larger and semi-buoyant aircraft was not forthcoming at the time. The story of the test program was recounted by John McPhee in his book The Deltoid Pumpkin Seed (ISBN 0-374-51635-9). This aircraft has a special place in UFO and conspiracy lore, since enthusiasts have drawn parallels between the shape of this aircraft and some reported UFOs from around the same era. Excerpt: Survivor Series (1998) was the twelfth annual Survivor Series professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), which took place on November 15, 1998 at the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Fourteen professional wrestling matches were scheduled on the event’s card, a noticeably higher number than most pay-per-view events due to the fact that the main focus of the card was a tournament for the vacant WWF Championship titled Deadly Game. It was the first tournament held with the WWF Championship on the line in ten years, the last being at WrestleMania IV. Both tournaments were 14-man tournaments instead of the regular 8 or 16-man tournaments. Aside from the tournament, two other championship matches occurred: the first defense of the WWF Women’s Championship since it had been reactivated and a triple threat tag team match for the WWF Tag Team Championship. This event was also the first Survivor Series not to feature the traditional Survivor Series elimination-style tag team match, although the notion of surviving is apparent in the knockout tournament. The only other time a Survivor Series event has not featured the traditional match is in 2002 but did feature the inaugural |

By 1900, it had become the most popular sport in Victoria. Tom WillsThe complex origins of the game go back to the early 1840s and are covered in The Origins of Australian rules football On 17 May 1859, the first rules for a local code of football were written during a meeting of four members of the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC): Tom Wills, William Hammersley, J.B. Thompson and Thomas Smith. The meeting was held at the Parade Hotel on the site of the present MCG Hotel. Wills, a renowned cricketer, was secretary of the MCC at the time. He had attended Rugby School and was familiar with the argument between the proponents of allowing players to handle the ball (ie, Rugby football) and those who wanted players to use their feet only, the style later adopted by the Football Association. Below are the rules for Australian Rules Football, alleged to have been used by the Geelong Football Club in 1859. They were originally written down by hand. Graeme Atkinson, writing in Everything You Wanted Know About Australian Rules Football … considers it likely that these Geelong rules were drawn up prior to the first rules of the Melbourne Football Club which were drafted on 17 May 1859.: 1. TT goes without saying that we are doggy ; • Arcady would lack a primary charm if it were dogless, and there are four to keep us company. Chief of the tribe, in dignity and in consciousness of the same, is Angus, the Scotch hound. His full title is Angus MacLeod, but intimates prefer the shorter style— while Cathy, I regret to say, will address him only by the corrupted name of ” Cloudy.” From MacLeod to Cloudy is only a step, to be sure; but it is the step from the sublime to the ridiculous, and the good beast feels it, I can see, though natural courtesy and a marked liking for the child allow him to show his feelings as little as may be. There is no doubt that Angus MacLeod is a gentleman of fine blood and finer manners. The vulgarities of life, the foolish interludes enjoyed by meaner dogs, are as if they were not for MacLeod ; he sits like a model of some antique picture, and his lofty nose is reared above the common issues of our world. You can love friend Angus, and he can love you with unstinting loyalty; but there is a reserve about him, a pleasant Scotch reserve, that marks even the softest amenities between dog and master. Angus would not give way to tears, I believe, if anything happened to me; but his grief would be no less sincere for its repression. Donald, the Irish setter, is just a sportsman; he has few interests apart from hunting, and, like all specialists who have cleverness to back their industry, he has made a wonderfully finished art of sport. His one drawback is a tendency to criticism ; he knows his subject, and is entitled to speak with authority ; but it is none the less irritating, when one has missed an easy shot, to see him turn his head and textit{talk to one for one’s good. A Natural Method Of Physical Training $14.31 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:III. HOW TO BREATHE. f T the time of this writing the newspapers 1 contain comments on the illness and death of certain prominent athletes. The winner of many prizes passes away at the age of twenty-four. Lung weakness seizes upon other seemingly stalwart types of “trained” men. These are startling facts. They form a significant comment on some modern methods of drilling the machinery of the human body. If men are to gain muscle at the expense of their life, it is plain that people will soon begin to look askance at training methods of every kind. What is the difficulty ? Why has training become dangerous ? Why do lung and heart troubles assail in after years the enthusiastic followers of highly active sport ? The answer seems to me to be this: Thatmodern “training” has become a “straining” system that is frequently not only indiscreet but dangerous. It is dangerous not only because of its useless violence and hardship, but because of the pernicious theories upon which it is founded. It begins on the outside instead of the inside. Greater than all its other evils is its neglect of the lungs. When we stop for a moment to consider the tremendous importance of the lungs it must become apparent that any neglect of these great central boilers of the body is the worst kind of neglect. The office of the lungs is of the very highest importance. This importance is incidentally acknowledged by many writers and teachers, but the development of the lungs is left to take care of itself, it being assumed as a general thing that all exercises tend sufficiently to expand the lungs. To be sure, great stress is occasionally laid upon the expansion of the chest, but the assumption too frequently appears to be that this expansion is a matter of external muscular development. Tou have thought, perhaps, that a man with such a sharp eye and granite face as that, must be a very terrible person, whose heart was quite left out when he was made, and whom little children had better run away from. It is just because this was not true, that I first believed in General Jackson. A brave man is never a mean one; and it is mean to despise or bully children and women. I place children first, because every woman who has ever had one, does so. But to my story. We, who have lived so peacefully and quietly in the land for which our brave ancestors fought, do not think as often as we ought of the sufferings and trials through which they purchased it for us. Until lately, our houses were not burned down over our heads, or ransacked and robbed, nor our mothers and sisters insulted before our eyes, nor our fathers and brothers dragged off as prisoners of war, and kicked and cuffed for sport by the enemy. -All this, Andrew Jackson’s boyish eyes saw. Do you wonder at the fire in them ? One of his earliest recollections was of the meeting house in his native place turned into a hospital for his wounded, maimed, dying, brave countrymen ; and his own widowed mother, leading him there by the hand to nurse them, and dress their wounds, and comfort them, as |

A Sketch Of The Natural History Of Australia; With Some Notes On Sport $21.59 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free.Excerpt from book:Section 3CHAPTER VI THE POUCHED MOLE The Pouched Mole (Notoryctes typhlops), or Urquamata, was only discovered in South Australia quite recently— about five years ago, I believe—in the immediate neighbourhood of Lake Eyre. It has been compared by naturalists with the Golden Moles of Africa, and one American anatomist would have included it, though wrongly, with the placental types. With its powerful legs and claws, this insectivorous animal burrows in the sand more rapidly even than the echidna, and its movement, with the back partly exposed, has been happily compared by Mr. Lydekker J to that of a porpoise in a smooth sea. This little mole, which only measures with its short tail about six inches, has reddish fur. As the echidna disappears in the warmer season, so is the pouched mole exceedingly scarce in winter time. The Pouched Mole Notm-yctes typhlops 1 Marsupials and Monotremes (Allen’s Naturalist’s Library). Section 4Part III.—THE MONOTREMES INTRODUCTORY The Monotremes are the very lowest creatures in the mammalian scale; and it seems almost possible that they will one day be treated as a separate order, though it is not for a small handbook like the present to depart from the orthodox treatment of the subject. Of course, they come in a sense under the category of mammals; but, on the other hand, they fulfil the conditions in a manner far from satisfactory. The reproduction of the young is by eggs; and the liquid on which they are nourished is not the true milk of mammals, being neither secreted nor taken inthe same manner, indeed it is pumped like perspiration through the pores of the skin, which in the echidna forms a pouch. The eggs are meroblastic1 like those of birds. The casual observer of Nature’s household would scarcely connect the beautiful birds with… |

The reason of my becoming associated with Christ Church was that I sat for a history scholarship there in the summer term, and although I did not get it, being over the usual age, the Dean very kindly wrote to tell me that if I was prepared to read for honors they would be glad to admit me on the strength of my papers. I went to see him, and forged another link with fate. No man has done more for me than Dean (afterwards Bishop) Paget, and few, if any, have I ever loved more deeply. He was aspiritual father to me, and the wisest and kindest of friends. Acting on his recommendation, I came into residence at the House, and it has always been a source of satisfaction to me to belong to that proud foundation.
